- The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute (HPI) is conducting research and policy analysis to address racial and ethnic disparities in childhood obesity. In a new fact sheet, Research and Policy Analysis to Address Childhood Obesity, HPI describes their work identifying the root causes of these disparities and identifying evidence-based policy strategies to address them. - The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute has produced a series of briefs that examine specific child health indicators among African American, Hispanic, and white children. The briefs in this series include the following:
- The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute examines disparities in mental health treatment in Changing the Landscape: Depression Screening and Management in Primary Care. The report looks at efforts by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to make depression screening and treatment standard practice in all primary care settings throughout the city. - Racial/Ethnic Differences in Body Mass Index, Morbidity and Attitudes Toward Obesity among U.S. Adults describes racial and ethnic differences by gender in body mass index (BMI). The study, which appeared in the "Journal of the National Medical Association," examines the relationship between morbidity and BMI and also assesses racial and ethnic disparities in attitudes toward and perceptions about obesity. - In collaboration with PolicyLink, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute published Breathing Easier: Community-Based Strategies to Prevent Asthma. This brief discusses the community conditions that can trigger an asthma attack, highlights strategies used by communities to reduce those triggers, and provides policy options for improving community environments.
